Home Maintenance is Obedience to God

I had my asphalt driveway sealed this week. This is our first house. I have never had an asphalt driveway before, and in Baton Rouge (my hometown) people don’t have asphalt driveways, so I didn’t know that you were supposed to  seal it so that it wouldn’t crack and let water get down into the asphalt and tear up the driveway. Unfortunately, we’ve been in it for nearly two years, and this is the first time I’ve sealed it. So needless to say, there are several larger cracks. We’ll see what happens this winter.

The Bible has something very significant to say about home maintenance. It’s in Ecclesiastes 10:18, and it should be emblazoned somewhere in our house and heart: “Through indolence the rafters sag, and through slackness the house leaks.” What project are you putting off, procrastinating on? What part of your house is sagging or leaking in some way? There might perhaps be a lack of funds, or a lack of time. But is there a lack of diligence? a lack of submission to God? When you fix that thing that has been staring you in the face for months, you are bringing glory to God by fulfilling the creation mandate to subdue the earth. May the Lord give us grace to put indolence and slackness and laziness to death.
