I don’t understand the point. Where is the value in conversations about how, relatively, this oil spill is only the 9th worst in history? Is it better to rejoice in how it’s not that bad or to talk about how bad it is in such a way that would spur us on to action?

The value is in recognizing that what is in fact a horrible disaster is also in fact not the worst disaster of this sort ever, and so we ought not to speak as if it is, nor as if this will happen every time an oil well is drilled. It’s a similar observation to the fact that more people die in car crashes than they do in airplane crashes every year, but we freak out much more over the airplane crashes than we do over car crashes. Why?

Obviously, we need to be talking about how bad this oil spill is, and various folks need to take various sorts of actions. But the point of the post was to say that those who deliver news to us shouldn’t paint armageddon scenarios when the reality is that this spill isn’t (at least not yet!) as bad as we’ve seen on earth.

Let’s just hope the federal government doesn’t bail out BP if they go bankrupt. I wouldn’t put it past them ;-).
