A Prayer for the Fourth of July

The second verse of the patriotic song, “America the Beautiful,” is generally unknown. And yet it contains a prayer that is stunning in its understanding of the true nature of liberty:

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.

May the Lord answer this prayer for self-control and obedience to the law by sending His Spirit to make sin hideous and Jesus beautiful, that people might repent and believe the gospel.
