Gandalf on redeeming the time…

Frodo: I wish that none of this had happened.

Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

  1. It’s from Fellowship of the Ring, Chapter 2 “The Shadow of the Past” (55), just past the Ring poem describing the other Rings of Power. That particular version above is the movie one, which us one of few changes I like better in the movie version than the book.

From the book, they are talking about the rise of the Shadow. Gandalf say, “Always after a defeat and a respite, the Shadow takes another shape and grows again.” “I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “And so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given us.”

Okay, I like both scenes. They’re both different contexts that both share some unique wisdom.
