John Wycliffe on the power of preaching (nine points from his “On the Truth of Holy Scripture”)

1. It breaks our hearts through fear (Jer. 23:29).
2. It crushes through sorrow (Ps. 51:17).
3. It melts through love (Song of Solomon 5:6).
4. It draws upward through desire beyond the hardness of heart (Song of Solomon 1:4)
5. It drinks in through delight (Ps. 77:3).
6. It gives life through inspiration (Heb. 4:12; John 5:25).
7. It heals the sick (Ps. 107:20).
8. It cuts off diseased limbs and inflicts wounds in order to save (Heb. 4:12).
9. It illuminates so that the splinters of sin might be seen (Ps. 119:105).
