A father’s prayer at a child’s baptism (James Lyon)

At the February 1850 baptism of his little daughter Mary Adair, James Adair Lyon offer these thoughts in his journal: “I made an unreserved dedication of her to God – it is my earnest prayer that her heart may be changed and cleansed by the regenerating influences of the Holy Spirit of which the baptismal water is but the emblem – If she lives, may she live for the honor and glory of God, if she dies may she leave behind her the evidence, as did for departed sisters Addie and Maggie, of the faithfulness of a Covenant Keeping God.”
