A forgotten verse to Wesley’s “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

I’m not sure why we don’t sing this verse by Wesley any longer, but I wish we did. Perhaps it’s because we don’t use the word “efface” in common speech today…

Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface,

Stamp Thine image in its place:

Second Adam from above,

Reinstate us in Thy love.

Let us Thee, though lost, regain,

Thee, the Life, the inner Man:

O, to all Thyself impart,

Formed in each believing heart.
